The model simply fed her son because he needed feeding and the photographer saw how beautiful that moment was he simply moved her back on set and shot it. “It was a completely natural moment that resulted in a powerful picture” said Elle Editor-in-Chief Justine Cullen.

This is such a big leap for making breastfeeding a norm. The hypocrisy that surrounds breastfeeding astounds me. A breastfeeding mother is told to cover up and that she is indecent for feeding her child. A half-naked model is readily accepted. So as long as your breasts are serving the purpose of satisfying the male gaze, it’s okay for it to be exposed but God forbid it feed a child. No, you have to go hide in a toilet if that’s what you want to do with your breasts.

So for Elle to make this their cover image is refreshing. It shows breastfeeding for what it is: beautiful, natural and normal.

Trufino posted the image to her Instagram saying:

There is nothing more powerful and beautiful than motherhood. The last thing I want to do is be controversial, so please take this for what it is, let us #normalizebreastfeeding there is nothing worse than a mother that is judged for feeding her hungry child in public. #weareonlyhuman I’m so proud of this cover and for what it’s stands for. I obviously don’t look like this while I am breastfeeding but this stands for all women out there, whether you breastfeed or not, we gave birth, we are women, we are mothers. Thank you to ELLE for being so bold and making such an encouraging, positive and healthy statement. #womenunite
