Welcome to Week 3

Week 3 is when you will ovulate and conceive. This is the week when your partner’s sperm will fertilise your egg, and the resulting zygote will go on to implant into the wall of your uterus.

Update on Your Body

This week, following sexual intercourse, one of your partner’s sperm cells will fertilise an egg inside your fallopian tube. Once this happens, the fertilised egg, now called a zygote, will move into your uterus to implant itself into your uterine wall. You may not necessarily experience any symptoms or changes in your body at this point. However, some women do experience implantation symptoms, including abdominal cramps, increased vaginal discharge and implantation bleeding.

Update on Your Baby

This week, your baby will go from being a zygote to a blastocyst, rapidly multiplying and growing larger. A placenta will develop and slowly start to secrete the β-HCG hormone into your blood and urine, whose levels once elevated, will help in determining a positive pregnancy test. Your baby will develop vital organs including the digestive system, brain, spinal cord and heart this week. The amniotic fluid that protects your baby inside the womb will also begin to form.

Practically microscopic, even smaller than a grain of salt.

Tips for an Expectant Mom

Dos

If you have previously been taking any vitamin or mineral supplements or medications, consult your doctor before continuing with them.
If your job involves exposure to radiation, consult your doctor to gauge the risk and take precautionary measures (masks, bodysuits or headgear), if required.

Don’ts

Limit your alcohol and caffeine consumption, and avoid smoking.
Do not take any new medication without seeking a go-ahead from your doctor first.

Tips for an Expectant Dad

Dos

Think of some ways to surprise, comfort and support your partner during her pregnancy.
Ensure that you ask questions and help her with various decisions, so she feels you are equally invested in this journey.
Encourage her to eat nutritious food and exercise regularly.
